Meteora

Meteora is a unique rock formation in central Greece, characterized by towering cliffs with dramatic vertical drops. The name 'Meteora' means 'suspended in the air' or 'in the heavens above' in Greek. The geological formations of Meteora were formed over millions of years from a combination of natural erosion and tectonic movements. The formation is home to several Eastern Orthodox monasteries dating back to the 14th century, perched on top of the steep cliffs. These monasteries have played an important role in the history of the Greek Orthodox Church and continue to be places of worship and pilgrimage. In 1988, Meteora was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognized for its natural beauty and cultural significance.
