The Bamyan Buddhas were two monumental statues of standing Buddha carved into the side of a cliff in the Bamyan valley of central Afghanistan. They were believed to have been built in the 4th and 5th centuries AD and were once a major pilgrimage site for Buddhists from around the world. Unfortunately, the Buddhas were destroyed in 2001 by the Taliban, but their history and cultural significance remain an important part of Afghanistan's heritage.
